The Lands Still Hold Our Stories Hike

Tuesday, April 23rd | 8:30pm

Join local Indigenous Knowledge Carriers, Tera John along with Courtney Miller, for a special Earth Week Hike at Ingraham Preserve at Cedar River on Tuesday, April 23 at 8:30pm.

Hike in the light of the rising full moon, the Sucker Fish Moon. Learn the story of this moon’s name and how the sucker is honored for keeping the Anishinaabeg people alive in the sparse month of little game and low food caches. Hear how the rich living tradition of Anishinaabe storytelling meets, supports, and enhances the more often heard stories learned from geology, topography, and archeology.

Through this walk together, we are reminded that we all carry a piece of this larger story. And the land here still tells those stories… Come with an open mind and commitment to deep, respectful listening. Tera and Courtney are members of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.

Space is limited and all attendees must register in advance. This hike is not recommended for young children. Pets are not allowed on guided experiences.

This hike will take place under a full moon in dark, nighttime conditions. Low light (red or green) flashlights or rockhound/uv lights are preferred, and at times all lights will be off allowing for the moonlight to shine our path. The Ingraham Preserve terrain is mostly flat, with one section of trail with a moderate incline. The hike duration will be approximately 1.5-2 hours and we will hike approximately 3 miles. Please wear appropriate clothing and shoes for hiking in springtime and bring any special equipment such as trekking poles. A water bottle is also a good idea.
