The Leelanau Conservancy owns and manages land primarily to maintain and enhance the ecological heritage of our area. As funding and resources allow, enhancement and restoration of these lands is encouraged through our guiding principles which includes protecting the conservation values for which the land was protected, taking a proactive approach through preventative maintenance and best management practices, collaborating with pertinent conservation partners, and honoring the expectations of the local community and donors wishes that are compatible with our management plans.
We put our values into practice in the following ways:
- Protect and manage important and unique natural areas for the preservation of significant heritage resources, native plant and wildlife populations or habitat, water quality and biological diversity.
- Integrate individual Conservancy owned or managed lands as part of larger wildlife corridors to accomplish landscape scale conservation.
- Provide public access for various forms of recreational, educational, and scientific use where appropriate.
- Demonstrate ecologically and economically sustainable forestry and agriculture on appropriate properties.
