Herbert grew up in Reed City Michigan, Osceola County, in the watershed of the Muskegon River. He had an active, outdoor childhood exploring the land and the water of the region.
Herb loved the woods as a child and often spent time there running. At Michigan State he was a dual student/athlete studying Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Geography. An elite runner, he competed in Cross County and Track.
Subsequently, Herbert pursued careers as professional runner, in outdoor sports and recreation marketing, and in elementary physical education. He has lived in Colorado, Minnesota, Oregon, Wisconsin before making his current home in Centerville Township with his wife. His latest project is transforming their newly built home in a clearing in the woods into an arboretum. Herb enjoys being outdoors in all seasons, kayaking, hiking, and snowshoeing.
