It’s a privilege and a delight to be a docent for the Conservancy. I grew up in Ohio, along the shore of Lake Erie, and have always had a strong interest in the outdoors. Early on, I developed an affinity for the north, with its clear balsam-scented air, sparkling waters, and abundant wildlife. Leelanau is true north country. It’s a different environment than we have down state, and it provides a different sense of place, for those who “tune in.” That’s the essence of what we seek to accomplish with guided walks on the Conservancy properties—help develop a sense of place. I have formal training and degrees in engineering and law, with some formal and a lot of self-training in the natural sciences. This mix, along with a passion for the mission of the Conservancy, motivates me as a docent.
