Nestled between M22 and Little Traverse Lake is Swanson Preserve—woods and wetland and wild shoreline ready for winter exploration. The trail is short, but offers a variety of winter attractions and varied views. If conditions allow, the route will include walking—safely—along the lakes frozen wild shoreline. This will not be a fast paced hike as we want to take time to find attractions and share discussion of observations. It will be mostly an out-and-back loop.
Snowshoes may be helpful as they offer improved traction and firm base for planting your feet as well as “floatation” on the snow and slush. Yak-Tracs or other similar traction devices may be used, but lack floatation. Trekking poles can be used for improved balance, stability and to prevent falls. Conditions are unknown until the event draws near. Route and activities will be adjusted as needed.
Dress appropriately for weather, temperature, and snow conditions. Insulated waterproof footwear is recommended. Layered clothing systems work best and allow adjustment for varied activity levels and other conditions. Fuel up and hydrate before the hike and bring water to have on the hike if needed.
The parking lot will be plowed at the trailhead.
If conditions are unsafe or extreme, the hike may be canceled. You will be alerted by email.
