Enjoy a June morning exploring the Whaleback natural area just South of Leland.
A unique geological feature, sailors long used it as a point of reference while sailing through the Manitou Passage. This moraine, formed through glaciation about 11,000 years ago, offers more than just an interesting view when seen from the lake. While appreciating the beauty of this place, the focus of the hike is on some of the “incentives” that make Whaleback their home, and also on the health of local trees. Learn a bit about how the LC is addressing the changes coming about through the changes in our climate. Please note that the quarter-mile hike to the top is a steady ascent over a root studded pathway.
Slow, easy pace. Stopping to explore, discussing theme often. Wear practical shoes for hiking, bug spray and a water bottle.
