Hike at Houdek Dunes — Sunday, April 23 at 2pm
Had you visited Houdek Dunes Natural Area several thousand years ago, you would have arrived via a sandy beach (now M22) of the high water level of ancient Nipissing Great Lakes, minus the sand dunes. Erosion, wind and weathering, and longshore currents have deposited, over the last few thousand years, a magnificent coastal dune area hosting unique hardy, stress-tolerant species of plants and animals. On this hike, you will experience the natural succession of vegetation from open dunes to northern hardwoods forests while looking for evidence of the diversity of wildlife that is supported by each habitat. While access to Lake Michigan is not available from Houdek, Conservancy docents love exploring this favorite 370-acre natural area with you.
