For those of you who enjoy nature and getting out fairly early in the morning, looking for birds at Lighthouse West Natural Area in mid-May is the place to be.
Bird migration reaches its peak this time of year, and the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula is a resting place on birds’ trip to nesting grounds farther north. Warblers are a certainty, but we could see buntings, tanagers, towhees and various other birds including shore birds, raptors and possibly eagles. Nothing guaranteed, but it’s always fun.
The trail is flat except for stairs down to Lake Michigan, and the pace will be ambling. Docents Bert, Greg and Karl will be your guides. Binoculars recommended!
