The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970 in cities across the United States. Public concern for the environment had begun to take hold in the ‘60s, and former Wisconsin governor, Gaylord Nelson, founded the day to encourage awareness about pollution and other environmental issues. From that first Earth Day on, the day has been a reminder to appreciate and care for the land, water and wildlife that give so much to us.
Every year the Leelanau Conservancy hosts Earth Week, a weeklong series of fun, free events that we hope you’ll join us for. We have hikes, volunteer opportunities, social events and an end of the week concert at Tandem Ciders to wrap it all up! Join us for some or all of the week’s events April 18-24 to give back, have fun, and find your Leelanau adventure.
