Leelanau County has been a source of inspiration since I was little. Summering here was the high point of every year. When I moved up here full time in 2008, I finally felt I was home. My careers were being an educator, social worker and late in life artist. I’ve hiked the numerous trails in the county for many years, but when I began taking the docent led hikes by The Leelanau Conservancy, I was amazed about how much I didn’t know. I was so excited about my new knowledge, that I inquired about becoming a docent, even though I have no science background at all. I have worked with children a lot, so I asked about doing hikes with children. The idea was greeted with enthusiasm. It is a thrill to inspire excited learning about the wonders of the amazing Conservancy properties. Creating an awe of nature in young people gives the hope of continued conservation of this precious land.
